Attractions in Nottingham
Known as the “Queen of the Midlands”, Nottingham is located in the East Midlands of England and is a popular tourist destination, particularly for its connections to Robin Hood. Visiting Nottingham there is much to see, both across the city and within the county.
Of all the attractions to see in Nottingham, Sherwood Forest is one of the most popular attracting thousands of fans of the legendary Robin Hood every year. Located about twenty miles north, Sherwood Forest Country Park is easily accessible on a trip to Nottingham thanks to numerous public transport links and excellent road links along the A614.
Once in Sherwood Forest, it is worth checking into the visitor’s centre. There you will be able to get directions to and a little history about the ‘Major Oak’, the tree which according to legend and local belief, Robin Hood used to hide from his enemies.
For the major Robin Hood fans, a trip to Nottingham is not complete without visiting Nottingham’s most popular attraction, the ‘Tales of Robin Hood.’ Expect to step back in time to dark, medieval Britain and experience the life of one of Britain’s bravest outlaws.
Daytime tours and even medieval night-time banquets are a popular feature, as is archery, history quizzes and fantasy games and workshops.
Only two minutes from Nottingham’s most popular attraction lies another of the city’s popular sightseeing destinations, Nottingham Castle. Technically no longer a castle, Nottingham Castle is a beautiful seventeenth century mansion which has been built on the site of the original medieval castle.
Today the castle is a popular museum and art gallery, housing numerous visual art collections, silver, glass and artefacts that span Nottingham’s history. Only ten minutes walk from Nottingham city centre, Nottingham Castle is an ideal attraction to see on a visit to Nottingham, particularly when combined with the neighbouring Tales of Robin Hood attraction.
While famous for the legend of Robin Hood, there are other ‘non-Robin Hood’ attractions in Nottingham that are worth seeing, particularly the City of Caves. Just five minutes’ walk from Nottingham Train Station, the City of Caves is a popular family attraction that comprises of more than 400 caves, some dating back as far as the Dark Ages.
On a tour around the caves, it’s possible to see how they have been used throughout the centuries, as different generations sought refuge and shelter within them.
