Walking in London along Whitehall: Banqueting House, Churchill Museum, Parliament

The name derives from the original Palace of Whitehall, home to royalty and its ministers for centuries until destroyed by fire in 1698. Fortunately for today's visitors The Banqueting House, completed in 1622, survived.

Used today for official receptions, the 17th century building is a remarkable work of art inside and out. One of the most outstanding examples of Italian Renaissance in London, the view from the street is spectacular.

But the interior is no less worth a visit. Inside, there are dozens of paintings, decorative items and furniture from the period and later. Visitors can also enjoy lunchtime concerts of classical baroque while they dine.

The London Eye is located nearby the IMAX cinema and the London Aquarium, not to mention Big Ben and the Tower, so there are lots of attractions within a short walk.
Harrods in London

The world's greatest department store was established on its current site in 1849 by Charles Henry Harrod, a wholesale grocer. For those looking not merely to buy - but to experience - on any given day you may find opera singers performing at the top of the Egyptian Escalators or a future star serving at one of the counters. Pierce Brosnan once worked in the Pharmacy and the original Darth Vader was a fitness consultant in the sports department.

Kew Palace and Gardens

Open to the public since Queen Victoria's decree, except for the restoration interval, the palace has several other attractions. Not least of these are the world-famous Royal Botanic gardens outside the palace. Beginning as a mere nine acres in 1751, the plants and grounds have, well, blossomed to its current three hundred. It's estimated that the gardens house as much as 12% of examples of the world's known plant species.

The West End, London

Leicester Square has cinemas for the movie-goer and street performers for live, impromptu entertainment. And, as expected, there are crowds of people and distinctive architecture for those who just want to take in the spontaneous sights that uniquely define any metropolis. To see ground zero of 'mod' 60s fashions, visit Carnaby Street where you can still pick up an Austin Powers-style vest or a pair of bell-bottomed jeans.

Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London

Though destroyed in 1644, the exact location was rediscovered in 1989 when remnants of the original foundations were discovered beneath Anchor Terrace on Southwark Bridge Road. Legal and other restrictions prevented rebuilding on the original site. But the new site is close enough by and the recreation accurate enough to allow the original to be easily imagined.
